Let the Daffodils Dance - April Is Cancer Awareness Month - Take Your Vitamin D3!

By

Every one of us have lost someone we love to cancer. The good news is... and yes it is good... living a life proactive against cancer, protects us from all chronic illnesses as well. According to the World Health Organization 30% of cancers are preventable. There is nothing new about this list - really is the same cast of villains for every chronic disease:
The five leading behavioral and dietary risks:
high body fat
low fruit and vegetable intake
lack of physical activity (no excuse of no time for gym)
tobacco use (or exposed to second hand smoke of others)
alcohol use (a much lower threshold than you think!)
And...
D is for Daffodils... D is for vitamin D3 - one of our best defenses against cancer
Especially in Canada - where the sun seems to make only very rare guest appearances, please speak to your health care professionals about vitamin D3 supplementation. BTW, lack of vitamin D is also cited as a major contributor to heart disease. Unfortunately there has been a fear mongering campaign to sunshine. No - we should not bake ourselves bronze in the sun - however sunshine - about 10 minutes a day produces roughly 10,000 IU of vitamin D3. Black skin requires more sun time. Sun screens do not allow us to make vitamin D. But again - we are only suggesting 10 minutes a day. However, season, time of day, cloud cover, smog, skin pigmentation, and sunscreen use are all factors that can affect the amount of ultraviolet radiation received and thus vitamin D synthesis. And yes, in northern states & in Canada - seriously consider supplementation.
Vitamin D - very difficult to get from food, especially if fish isn't your thing. Eggs are a good source of vitamin D - however there has been a smear campaign on eggs for years - too bad. I am personally not a huge fan of those D enriched foods & beverages - might be more of a marketers creation than a scientist's. Our current Canadian RDA (recommended daily allowance) is a meagre 600 IU - which is proven to be insufficient in Canadian winters. Many researchers & oncologists suggest around the 2,000 IU range. Your vitamin D status can be checked with a blood test - please make sure you have blood tests at least once per year - and make sure you add vitamin D testing to the list - please don't assume your doctor does it automatically.
The numbers vary - but it is thought that vitamin D supplementation can reduce the risk of many cancers by 60-70%. Most multivitamins vitamin D levels are based on archaic science. There are many methods & intricacies to this cancer prevention process and merits checking with your health professionals. However, it is NOT a get out of jail for free card - living a health centric lifestyle - as outlined above - is still critical to cancer prevention, even with vitamin D.
